Obtaining

Ethylene glycol — the simplest representative of polyols. Ethylene glycol is produced by hydration of ethylene oxide.

Application

In purified form ethylene glycol is a clear, colorless liquid with a slightly oily texture, it is odorless and has a slightly sweet taste, but its consumption is fatal.

An important property is the ability of ethylene glycol to lower the freezing point of water, so the material is widely used in the manufacture of low-freezing and cooling liquids (automotive antifreeze, antifreeze, brake fluid).

Ethylene glycol is used in the manufacture of hydraulic fluids, synthetic fibers, resins, solvents, and for other purposes.

Safety requirements

Ethylene glycol is flammable; the degree of impact on the body is a substance of third risk class.

Packing

Ethylene glycol is filled into aluminum barrels with a capacity of 110 and 275 dm і, barrels made of corrosion-resistant steel with a capacity of 110–250 dm і, a non-galvanized steel barrels with a capacity of 100, 200 dm і, and in tank cars with boilers of aluminum or corrosion-resistant steel.

Guaranteed shelf life

Premium — 1 year from date of manufacture

Class — 3 years from date of manufacture.

Basic properties and hazards
Basic properties Clear liquid. Oily, viscous residue solidifies on cooling vat. Odorless. Soluble in water. Hygroscopic. High boiling. Pollute the water.
Explosion and fire Flammable. Flash point of 120 °C. Ignited by heat from an open flame. Containers may explode when heated.
The risk to humans Has a narcotic effect. Harmful by inhalation (fatigue, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations, chest pain), ingestion (nausea, diarrhea, weakness), in contact with skin (redness, swelling), Eye (stinging, tears).
In case of fire may result in burns. If ingested, can cause chronic poisoning with damage to vital organs (blood vessels, kidneys, and nervous system). Ethylene glycol can be absorbed through the skin. Because of the low vapor pressure there is no danger of acute poisoning by inhalation.
Individual protection means For emergency responders — insulating protective clothing FIR 5 complete with an insulating mask IP-4M or breathing apparatus ASV-2. In case of fire — fire resistant suit, complete with self-rescuers SPI-20. In the absence of these samples: a combined-arms protective suit L-1 and L-2, complete with industrial gas mask RPG-67 with a cartridge A.
At low concentrations in the air (above MPC 100 times) — overalls, industrial mask small dimension of PFM-1 with universal protective cartridge ROM, self-protective individual set-fed into the breathing zone of clean air. Oil-resistant gloves, from the dispersion of butyl rubber, shoes.
Overalls, apron fabric membrane, rubber gloves and boots, mask mark "FG-13-A" and mark BKF.
